LifeSpring Hospitals is a growing chain of maternity hospitals based in Hyderabad, India. A joint venture between Acumen Fund and HLL Lifecare Limited, LifeSpring is a financially sustainable model for approaching the multi-faceted problem of maternal mortality and the lack of access to high quality maternal health care.
LifeSpring has been recognized as an innovative private sector approach to driving social change. It is for-profit for sustainability, but not profit-maximizing. LifeSpring builds maternity hospitals in urban slums and offers low-income women a choice where one did not exist before. Prior to LifeSpring, a pregnant woman could either deliver at home, or if she wanted an institutional delivery, she could deliver at an often under-resourced government hospital or a private hospital & often selling assets or taking out high interest loans to do so. LifeSpring offers an affordable solution, and provides high-quality, respectful care to its clients. LifeSpring’s expert doctors are committed to providing the right care package for every individual. We meet low-income women’s demand for safe, dignified, and affordable maternal care.
While LifeSpring’s customers are the working poor living in urban slums, it recognizes that many women living below the poverty line may not be able to afford LifeSpring’s services. Therefore, LifeSpring started LifeSpring Foundation, allowing donors to sponsor the deliveries of women too poor to afford the hospital’s services. To identify women for Kangu, LifeSpring’s outreach workers conduct the same identification process as LifeSpring Foundation by reaching out to women at their homes or places of business. To qualify for free services through the LifeSpring Foundation, the customer must have a government white card signifying that she and her family live below the poverty line and she can not have in the past delivered at a private institution. Through the Foundation, LifeSpring extends their customer-centered safe birth services to women who couldn’t otherwise afford them.
